Mixed-Use Circus Development, Birmingham

Fatade was appointed to lead the Energy and Sustainability Strategy for a landmark mixed-use development in Birmingham, a 37-storey gateway building comprising over 1,200 residential units and commercial spaces, delivered across four blocks.

Our scope included the Energy and Sustainability Strategy, Overheating and Thermal Comfort Assessments, as well as a comprehensive Daylight, Sunlight, and Overshadowing Assessment. Through a data-driven design process, we supported the project’s successful planning approval by aligning with the energy hierarchy, prioritising demand reduction, energy efficiency, and on-site renewable energy generation.

Using ApacheSim Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM), Fatade conducted detailed thermal modelling to assess overheating risks and ensure long-term comfort for residents. The building’s energy strategy incorporated an Air Source Heat Pump Energy Centre alongside a Solar Photovoltaic system, carbon emissions and contributing to the project’s sustainability goals.

In parallel, our Daylight, Sunlight, and Overshadowing Assessment evaluated the impact of the development on both internal spaces and the surrounding context, including neighbouring buildings and public realm areas, ensuring a well-balanced and context-sensitive design approach. Fatade’s integrated strategy helped optimise building performance, minimise environmental impact, and enhance the overall quality of life within this transformative city-centre development.
